Protect Your Vehicle. Understand Your Insurance.

Motor insurance can help protect against vehicle-related risks covered by a policy. Understand mandatory third-party liability, optional own-damage cover and the conditions that apply.

01 / The basics

What is motor insurance?

Motor insurance is a contract that may cover specified liabilities or vehicle losses, subject to the policy's terms and conditions. In India, third-party liability insurance is generally mandatory for vehicles used in public places under applicable motor vehicle law. Check current legal requirements for your vehicle and use.

Third-party cover addresses specified liability to others; it does not by itself cover damage to your own vehicle. Own-damage cover is separate or may be included in a package. Personal accident cover may be required or available subject to applicable rules and policy terms.

01

Third-party liability

Cover for specified legal liability to third parties, as set out by applicable law and policy terms. It does not cover your own vehicle's damage.

02

Own-damage cover

May cover insured-vehicle loss or damage from listed events, subject to deductibles, exclusions, IDV and policy conditions.

03

Personal accident

Personal accident benefits may be required or offered in applicable circumstances. Check who is covered, benefits and conditions.

04

Premium & deductibles

Premiums depend on cover, vehicle details, applicable rating factors and insurer pricing. Deductibles are amounts payable under the policy.

05

Exclusions & use

Usage, licence, vehicle condition, geography and event details can affect cover. Read exclusions and policy conditions.

06

Claims & inspection

Report incidents promptly and follow instructions. Assessment, repair authorisation and settlement depend on insurer review.

02 / Common cover types

Choose the cover structure with eyes open.

Terms differ by vehicle, insurer and policy. Check the schedule and wording rather than relying on a label.

01 / PRIVATE CAR

Car insurance

May combine third-party liability with optional or packaged own-damage cover. Vehicle use, declared details, deductibles and exclusions matter.

02 / TWO WHEELS

Two-wheeler insurance

Cover for a motorcycle or scooter can include third-party liability and, if selected, own-damage protection. Confirm vehicle, rider and use conditions.

03 / LIABILITY TO OTHERS

Third-party insurance

Generally mandatory for vehicles used in public places in India, subject to applicable law. It does not cover damage to your own vehicle.

04 / LIABILITY + OWN DAMAGE

Comprehensive insurance

Usually combines third-party and own-damage cover, with the latter subject to listed events, deductibles, exclusions and policy terms. Add-ons are not automatic.

05 / OWN VEHICLE

Standalone own-damage

Can cover specified damage to the insured vehicle when paired with valid third-party cover. Check eligibility, policy period and the linked liability policy.

06 / BUSINESS USE

Commercial vehicle insurance

Cover for eligible vehicles used for business or transport. Declared use, permits, vehicle category, drivers and policy wording are especially important.

03 / From selection to decision

A claim follows the policy conditions.

  1. 01Choose vehicle coverSeparate liability and own-damage needs.
  2. 02Review policy termsCheck deductibles and exclusions.
  3. 03Purchase policyVerify schedule, use and details.
  4. 04Insured eventKeep people safe and follow the law.
  5. 05Notify insurerUse the insurer's stated channel.
  6. 06Inspection & recordsProvide requested evidence.
  7. 07Claim assessmentInsurer reviews the circumstances.
  8. 08Settlement decisionSubject to approval and policy terms.

Claim settlement depends on policy conditions, applicable deductibles, exclusions, documentation, assessment and insurer approval.

04 / Understand your cover

Third-party and comprehensive are not the same.

This is a general comparison. Actual benefits depend on the insurer, selected cover, schedule and wording.

FACTOR GUIDE

Selected factors

Select or clear factors to review how details may affect underwriting or pricing. Impact and availability vary by insurer and current rating rules.

  • Vehicle type and model: parts, repair costs and risk characteristics may be considered.
  • IDV: declared value can affect own-damage cover and settlement limits for a total loss or theft.
  • Cover and add-ons: broader selected benefits can change the premium and policy conditions.

06 / Renewal considerations

No-claim bonus and optional add-ons.

RENEWAL / OWN-DAMAGE

No-claim bonus

In applicable own-damage policies, a no-claim bonus may provide a renewal premium discount when eligibility conditions are met. It is not a reduction in third-party premium. Check continuity, transfer and claim conditions with the insurer; terms may differ.

OPTIONAL / POLICY-DEFINED

Zero depreciation

May reduce depreciation deductions for specified parts in an own-damage claim. Eligibility, number of claims, part exclusions and settlement terms vary.

OPTIONAL / ASSISTANCE

Roadside assistance

May provide specified help after a breakdown, such as towing or assistance. Service limits, distance, events and response conditions apply.

OPTIONAL / SPECIFIED DAMAGE

Engine protection

May extend cover for defined engine-related losses in listed situations. Maintenance, water-ingress, consequential damage and other exclusions need careful review.

OPTIONAL / WHERE AVAILABLE

Return to invoice

May bridge a defined gap for total loss or theft under stated eligibility and valuation rules. Availability, vehicle age limits and exclusions vary.

Add-ons are optional unless a specific policy or applicable rule says otherwise. They are not automatically part of every comprehensive policy.

07 / If an incident happens

A careful claim process starts with safe steps.

  1. Prioritise safety

Check for injuries, contact emergency services where needed and follow legal reporting requirements.

  2. Record the incident

Note the time, location, parties and circumstances; collect photographs and details when safe and appropriate.

  3. Notify the insurer promptly

Use the contact channel and reporting timeframes shown in your policy. Do not assume repairs are authorised before confirmation.

  4. Complete inspection and documents

Cooperate with the insurer's survey or inspection and submit the requested policy, registration, licence, bills and other records.

  5. Review the decision

Ask for an explanation of deductions, deductibles, exclusions or settlement terms and use the policy's grievance process if needed.

Common questions

Motor insurance FAQs.

Is third-party motor insurance mandatory in India?

Third-party liability insurance is generally mandatory for vehicles used in public places under applicable motor vehicle law. Confirm current legal requirements for your vehicle and circumstances.

What is the difference between third-party and comprehensive cover?

Third-party cover addresses specified liability to others and does not cover your own vehicle's damage. A comprehensive package generally combines third-party and own-damage cover, subject to policy terms.

What is IDV?

Insured Declared Value is the value stated for the insured vehicle under an own-damage policy, determined under applicable policy and insurer rules. It can affect premium and settlement limits for total loss or theft; it is not necessarily the resale price.

What is a no-claim bonus?

It may be a renewal discount on eligible own-damage cover after a claim-free period, subject to conditions. It does not automatically discount third-party premium.

What should I do after an accident?

Prioritise safety and emergency support, follow legal reporting duties, record relevant details when safe, notify the insurer promptly and follow inspection and documentation instructions.

Are all repairs and add-ons covered automatically?

No. Repairs and optional benefits are subject to the policy schedule, add-ons selected, event coverage, deductibles, exclusions, authorisation and insurer assessment.
